On the third of June this year (2023), I’m taking part in a sponsored walk for charity in aid of Cancer Research UK. It’s called the Big Hike Peak District 2023. It’s a “gentle” meander around a marathon length course (26.2 miles or around 42 km).

I’ve not walked this sort of distance if a very long time. I’ve done 23 miles before but we’re talking 30+ years ago when I was young and fit. Since then I’ve sat behind a desk for a living with not a lot in the way of exercise.

Over the last couple of months I’ve been walking at weekends, slowly increasing the distance. I’m currently up to 16.7 miles with no breaks but then I need to grab some food to keep me going. There will be regular water stops plus food at the half way point as well as the finish so I’m don’t need to be able to make the full course distance without stopping, but it’s good to see that I can at least make it over half the distance.

At the moment all of my training has been along the canal which is relateively flat (barring a few locks) but it’s convinient for walking from home. I will need to start getting in some hill walking as well. The full route has around 530 meters of altitude gain along the course. That’s reasonably significant for a desk jockey.

If anyone is feeling particularly generous, I have a sponsorship page running for the event where I also post the occaisional training updates.
